One for two!

FIRE's Legal Consultancy has helped another reporter reverse contractual exposure to defamation, the 26th success overall of 29 interventions.

The development at Rolling Stone magazine, a written promise of protection as long as the freelancer reports responsibly, follows similar promises to FIRE-advised reporters.

Taken together, the actions nudge the magazine to a Yellow/Green rating in the FIRE Guide to Freelancer Protection—and likelier eligibility for the new $25,000 Greenlight Grants.

(A counterpart magazine didn't fare as well—details in the new year.)

As reported previously, these unique FIRE liability interventions have helped freelance reporters pursue sensitive lines of inquiry without exposing personal assets—to more fully report in the public interest.

Of the 26 stories, 23 have already been published, some of them listed here.
