FIRE has set an application deadline of April 27 for three Greenlight Grants that will support investigative stories while strengthening freelance reporting.

The grants are unusual: Reporters co-apply with the outlet that would publish or broadcast the proposed story.

The winning partnerships share a relatively generous story stipend of $25,000—$20,000 to the reporter, $5,000 to the outlet.

To qualify, outlets meet best-practice standards for engaging freelance reporters in the public interest.

If they pass an initial hurdle, the outlets and the reporters jointly fill out an application form that the reporters submit to FIRE. The form can be previewed here
